Nowadays, there are lots of places offering piercings; be it a nurse practitioner, an aesthetic beauty salon, hair dresser, or traditional jewelry store. Unfortunately, not everyone who is performing body piercings knows the intricacies of the craft.Piercing is not something that should be taken lightly, it is a craft that takes years to not only learn, but perfect. It is important to get pierced by a Professional Piercer because there are so many factors that go into creating a "good" piercing that will heal well and last for years to come. Factors including:Appropriate aseptic workflow techniquesProper biologic spore testing of sterilization equipmentProper equipment and products such as single use, tri-bevel needles, and implant grade jewelry (It is a red flag if they use piercing guns or "cartridge" piercing implements)Understanding of proper placement of piercings and how this may affect healingUnderstanding of different starting jewelry and appropriate sizing for different bodiesA complete understanding of different anatomiesWhere piercings should and should not be placedHow the different factors like angles, jewelry polish, jewelry composition, wound healing and aftercare may affect healingThese factors and much more are not something that can be learned over the course of a "weekend piercing course" nor even the course of a few months. Does Getting a Piercing Hurt?

Short Answer: All piercings hurt a little bit. But typically not as much as you expect.Long Answer: Everyone's pain tolerance varies; what may hurt a lot for one person, but not hurt at all for another. What you can expect is a little bit of pressure, a quick pinch, some "sliding", and then us adjusting the jewelry so it sits "just right". (All of this can be done in two or three slow "inhales" and "exhales"!)Our Piercer tries their very best to make the piercing process as comfortable as humanly possible. Because despite what they do for a living, they don't enjoy hurting people.🥺We use instruments and techniques that make everything as quick and relatively painless as possible. Believe us, if getting a piercing hurt as much as everyone expected, we probably wouldn't have a job doing it! We will guide you through breathing techniques to calm your nervous system & regulate and prepare your body (and mind) for getting a piercing before hand. Most people find the most uncomfortable part of the entire process is the anticipation and anxiety beforehand. You're going to do great!

How Much is a Piercing?

Short Answer: It varies.Long Answer: It varies depending on the piercing, if you are getting multiples of the same piercing, or multiple different piercings in one sitting, and the jewelry you choose.Our services are priced separately from our jewelry. When you are quoted for a total price, you will be given the cost of the service price, plus the jewelry cost. We will always verify that you are comfortable with the cost prior to performing a service. 
When you get multiples of the same type of piercing, (excluding earlobes & genital piercings) the additional service cost is discounted 50%. 		The multiples discount is only applicable if you are getting multiples of the same type of piercing, and must be on the same person. It does not apply if you are getting two different piercings in the same sitting (such as a navel piercing, and a daith piercing) as this requires two entirely different set ups/tools.

What Sterilization Practices Do You Use?

Our Studio is Proud to Use Sterilization Technology Including:SciCan Statim 5000 Series G4 Cassette Autoclave and;Ritter M9 S Series UltraClave All of our sterilizers are spore tested once a month using SporeAlert technology, assured to keep our clientele and practitioners safe. Any positive test results are immediately sent to us, by phone and email, to ensure the quickest possible interruption of possible contamination, and therefore, the safest practices for you."Biological indicators, or spore tests, are the most accepted means of monitoring sterilization because they assess the sterilization process directly by killing known highly resistant microorganisms (Geobacillus or Bacillus species). Mechanical and chemical indicators alone do not guarantee sterilization." - Center for Disease Control and PreventionWhile mechanical indicators alone do not guarantee sterilization, we do put a Class 5 Chemical Steam Integrator into each sterilization cycle that is run. Here is an example of how your integrator should look prior to having your jewelry inserted into a fresh piercing:This shows that the autoclave has met the conditions for sterilization, and has been run at the appropriate temperature, time, and achieved the proper pressure, to kill all possible biological material on any jewelry or instruments used. You are always welcome to request to see your mechanical indicator.We also keep our knowledge of cross-contamination and aseptic standards up to date with yearly continued education courses. Our piercer has taken courses including but not limited to: (yearly) Basic Blood Borne Pathogen training, (yearly) First Aid for Healthcare Practitioners Basic Life Support Training with CPR/AED training, Virology & Immunology: SARS-CoV-2 and Beyond Covid Precautions training. Our Piercer has also guested at many reputable APP studios across North America over the last 10 years, and has taken into consideration and implemented the most up to date practices available when it comes to their aseptic and sterilization techniques.We use medical grade equipment and disinfectants for tool reprocessing and surface decontamination including:Ultrasonic with a low-foam enzymatic cleaner (ratio of 4–8 ml per liter of water)Hospital grade disinfectants (including 1 minute kill time broad spectrum intermediate level disinfectant) in between clients, on every surface that has been used.We will always use Universal Standard Precautions when there is a possibility of working with bodily fluids. This means that we treat all clientele the same, regardless of any known or unknown risk of blood borne pathogens status. This lessens the risk of any Blood Borne Pathogen transmission.Safe Sharps: We never recap or re-use needles. Once we use a needle, they go directly into a biohazard bin for safe transport to an offsite sharps disposal unit.Clean After Every Client: Regardless of who they are to you, (say, if you come in with your sister or your partner) we clean every used surface with a 1 minute Broad Spectrum Disinfectant and wait for the appropriate kill time (1 minute) before starting another procedure. You can rest assured you are in good (very clean) hands with us! 🥰

Question 7

Why Should I Downsize the Length of my Post?

Accepted Answer

Downsizing the length of your post when there is extra room on it, is advisable for a few reasons:
This lessens the likelihood of catching it on things which in turn, can help the healing.
This lessens the likelihood of migration (see the section on migration for more info)
This lessens the likelihood of developing healing complications such as irritation bumps, tooth chipping, and gum erosion.
It lessens the likelihood of you losing the jewelry. When it is longer, you are more likely to catch it on things, which in turns, means you are more likely to lose it.

If you recently got a piercing, and are unsure as to whether or not you need to shorten the length of your post, we advise booking in for a check up at the very least. If you do not need to shorten the length we may advise coming back later.

Question 8

Why Does my Jewelry Have to Be Longer When I First Get a Piercing?

Accepted Answer

To ensure a comfortable healing process, when you first get a piercing from us, your jewelry will have a little bit of extra room (either diameter or length-wise) to ensure you do not over swell.All bodies are different, some people swell more than others, but we try to anticipate how much each client swells depending on the thickness of their tissue, their sleeping habits, daily activities, and other mitigating factors.Even if you know you don't swell alot, there will still be a little bit of extra room initially. Certain parts of the body swells more and less than others. We promise it's necessary.
If you are healing well, and haven't experienced much swelling, we may be able to downsize the length of your piece sooner than the 6-8 week mark. Please book an appointment for a jewelry change, and we can assess if it would be advisable to do so sooner. Don't forget to bring your Aftercare Brochure in with you to get 25% off your first downsize! (limit one per client, per day - Physical aftercare brochure much be present at the time of checking out)

Question 9

Can I Use Numbing Cream?

Accepted Answer

We do not advise using numbing cream prior to your piercing appointment for several reasons:
Numbing cream is not meant for puncture wounds and will not numb the entire tissue, just the outside. The result is that you will still likely feel the piercing itself.
We cannot guarantee our angles. Numbing cream can cause localized tissue changes, which can result in crooked piercings. When the tissue relaxes, the angle or placement of the piercing may change.

If you have applied numbing cream & it is obvious to us upon inspection of the piercing site, we will likely have to reschedule your appointment to another day.

Question 10

I Think I Have a Keloid, What Do I Do??

Good news is if you got pierced by us, and are following appropriate aftercare, it is very likely what you are experiencing isn't a true keloid. You have to be predisposed to keloiding conditions, which are diagnosed by a doctor.

Irritation bumps, however, are relatively common things to experience with piercings.

Irritation bumps can be caused by a variety of things including:
Sleeping on a young piercing
Bumping, catching, or knocking a relatively young piercing
Putting harsh irritants in, or on the piercing (the only thing we advise putting in or on your piercing is clean, running water, or sterile saline solution. Anything else tends to be too harsh)
Poor quality jewelry, or jewelry that is inappropriately sized for your specific piercing (if you have been pierced by us, or another reputable studio, this is unlikely to be the case)
Changing the jewelry to another style before the piercing is healed (costume jewelry or changing to a hoop too soon is included)

I Think I Have an Infection, What Do I Do??

Good news is if you got pierced by us, and are following appropriate aftercare, it is very likely what you are experiencing isn't a true infection. We use aseptic technique to minimize the likelihood of contamination throughout your piercing experience.

Irritation bumps, however, are relatively common things to experience with piercings.

Irritation bumps can be caused by a variety of things including:
Sleeping on a young piercing
Bumping, catching, or knocking a relatively young piercing
Putting harsh irritants in, or on the piercing (the only thing we advise putting in or on your piercing is clean, running water, or sterile saline solution. Anything else tends to be too harsh)
Poor quality jewelry, or jewelry that is inappropriately sized for your specific piercing (if you have been pierced by us, or another reputable studio, this is unlikely to be the case)
Changing the jewelry to another style before the piercing is healed (costume jewelry or changing to a hoop too soon is included)

If you are experiencing a bump on your piercing, please book a piercing check up and we can assess what caused your concern, and give you some advice as to how to remedy it.

If you are experiencing any of the following, we may suggest visiting your doctor for further assessment:
Extreme swelling that is radiating outside of the piercing site
Extreme throbbing/pain at the piercing site without touching it
Heat at the site of the piercing
Bright green/yellow fluid coming from the piercing site without pressure
You are experiencing a fever

Please keep in mind: If your piercing is removed, and there is a true infection, there is a risk of trapping infection and causing an abscess. If your doctor prescribes anti-biotics to remedy what you are experiencing, we suggest coming in to ensure you still have enough length on your piercing. This will allow for the piercing site to stay open &  the wound to drain while you finish your course of anti-biotics.

Question 12

Can I Bring my Own Jewelry?

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: We cannot use anything that comes from outside of the studio.Long Answer: There are several reasons why we cannot use outside jewelry. Being Association of Professional Piercers Compliant means we have certain standards we must adhere to in order to maintain membership, this includes using only APP Compliant jewelry.If you have jewelry that you purchased from another APP compliant studio with proof of purchase and listed manufacturer, we will happily install it for you. 
Please bring it with you in a small plastic baggie for us to inspect.We need to ensure the jewelry is of an appropriate gauge, length, and material for whatever piercing it is being installed in. We may advise purchasing a new post if you would like to reuse a compliant end.Costume Jewelry (from places like Claire's, Spencers, Hot Topic, Walmart, Etsy, etc) is low quality, and uses alloys that can cause allergic reaction, and permanent oxidization called "localized argyria" in the body if worn for long periods of time.We cannot reuse jewelry that has been worn by someone else. If you have purchased jewelry from a compliant studio and it has worn by someone other than yourself, we will not be able to use it. This minimizes the likelihood and risk of blood borne pathogen transmission. This is one of the reasons why we require proof of purchase prior to reuse of a compliant piece of jewlery.Jewelry from "traditional" jewelry stores such as People's, Ben Moss, Michael Hill's, etc. may be made of solid gold, but does not take into consideration the intricacies of the piece being worn in the body. The wearable surface often will have karat stamps, as well as threading that can cause issue when being inserted and removed. If you would like to wear a piece that you have purchased from a "traditional" jewelry store, we suggest waiting until fully healed to do so.

Question 13

How Many Piercings Can I Get at Once?

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: 3 - 4 is typically a safe number at one time.

Long Answer: The number of piercings you can get at once depends on many factors. Including; If you are getting multiple piercings in different places (face, ears, body, etc.), your daily activities including job, and sports, and how your immune system is.

It is generally safe to heal up to 4 piercings at once. 
We suggest waiting several months in between piercing cartilage on opposite ears, to ensure the best healing. We may advise waiting before getting more piercings if you have recently had multiple piercings, to ensure your immune system is not overburdened. 
The more piercings you are healing at once, the more likely you are to develop complications such as irritation, and the slower the healing process tends to be.

Question 14

Do You Use Piercing Guns?

Accepted Answer

While piercing guns may be the 'quick' answer to getting a piercing, it is certainly not the best way to be pierced. 
Piercing guns cause blunt force trauma to your tissue, can increase swelling, bleeding, and cannot be sterilized. On top of this fact, the jewelry used in piercing guns often is improperly sized (both in gauge and length) for a fresh piercing, and is made of lower quality material, which typically results in poor healing and often times scarring.

Our studio uses only high quality, single use, sterile, tri-bevel piercing needles crafted by North American made manufacturers including  Industrial Strength LLC.

Below, you can see a demonstration of piercing with a needle meant to be used in body piercing, versus two different types of 'gun' piercings.

Question 15

How Long Do I Have to Wait Before Changing my Jewelry?

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: We suggest waiting until your piercing is fully healed before changing the jewelry.Long Answer: How long we suggest waiting until changing your jewelry to another style or lower quality varies depending on the piercing. If you are wanting to change out your earlobes to something from Claire's, Spencer's Hot Topic, etc. ("Costume Jewelry") we suggest waiting at least the full 5-6 months until fully healed before trying out these different styles. Once you feel ready, try wearing them for short periods of time to see how your body responds. If it starts itching, burning, or you develop irritation after changing them, this is a good indicator that you have sensitivities will require implant grade materials forever. It is unlikely that this will change as time goes on.The longer you wear lower quality (materials that are not implant-grade certified; this includes sterling silver and materials advertised as "surgical steel") the more likely you are to develop an allergy or sensitivities over time. Please refer to the "healing times" section of the FAQ page or your aftercare brochure for your estimated heal time. If you are unsure whether or not you are healed enough for a style change (such as a stud to a ring) book a "piercing check up" appointment and we will be happy to assist!

Question 16

Can I Use Alcohol/Hydrogen Peroxide/Bactine/Tea Tree Oil on my Piercing?

Accepted Answer

We do not advise using any of the above to care for your piercing. All of these things tend to be much too harsh while you are healing.

In fact, hydrogen peroxide actually causes oxidation of the titanium's surface, thus causing it to be rough and cause issues when worn in the body.

Please refer to our Piercing Aftercare Guide to see Aftercare Instructions and only use filtered water and/or sterile saline, which you can purchase from us if needed.

Question 17

How Long Before I Can Go Swimming After a Piercing?

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: It varies depending on the piercing you get.

Long Answer: Your piercing is an open wound, and going into stagnant bodies of water (lakes, pools, hot tubs, even baths!) can risk infection or healing complications. Our general rule of thumb is the longer you can wait before submerging your new piercing in any stagnant body of water, the better. (Showers are great, please keep showering!)

If you do happen to go in any bodies of water, please ensure to clean you piercing with sterile saline, and thoroughly dry after. Excess moisture on and around your piercing is likely cause healing complications.

Does Getting a Piercing With a Needle Hurt More?

Definitely Not! While getting pierced with a needle sounds scary and intimidating, because our Piercer has multiple years of training, and uses high quality instruments, we can assure you the worst part of getting a piercing, is typically any anxiety you experience beforehand.

The piercing needles we use are specifically designed to be smooth, and allow for a relatively comfortable piercing process. We go to great lengths to ensure our clientele are as comfortable as possible during their appointments.

Will You Pierce My Babies' Ears?

Accepted Answer

Short Answer: We do not pierce anyone under the age of 5-6 years old.

Long Answer: There are a multitude of reasons why we choose not to pierce infants at our studio. 
Your ears grow as you age, and where the piercing is placed when a baby is an infant will likely change as they grow and age. The ideal placement when they are older, will likely not be in the same place as when they are an infant.
We are a very consent based studio. Your baby is unable to consent to a piercing procedure, and we want to ensure that they understand what is going on, if we are poking a hole in their body. Consciously, they might not remember, but the body remembers.
If something were to go awry during the healing process, your infant is unable to tell you that something is wrong. Embedding of jewelry, choking hazards, infection, and scarring are all issues that could happen.
Finally, infants are still discovering their bodies and can often pull on their hair, clothes, or body jewelry, which can cause migration and tearing of the tissue. If a piercing is torn from an ear, the remaining wound may need plastic surgery to repair.
